Our nurture base is a small group room for 6 to 10 children staffed by Mrs Edwards. Nurture groups offer a short term, focused, intervention strategy, which addresses barriers to learning arising from social / emotional and or behavioral difficulties, in an inclusive, supportive manner. While attending the nurture base children continue to remain part of their own class group and usually return full time to their classroom within four terms.
Mrs Edwards works closely with the class teachers, family workers and SEN team to ensure that the children are planned for appropriately. By doing this the school ensures children are provided with the appropriate, scaffolded support to enable them to cope and progress both academically and emotionally in school.
Central to the philosophy of nurture is attachment theory; an area of psychology which explains the need for any person to be able to form secure and happy relationships with others in the formative years of their lives. Nurture groups are an effective, evidenced based approach supporting those children who would benefit from additional support. Through successfully addressing the barriers to learning, this results in both improved academic attainment and improved health and wellbeing.
Our staff creates an attractive, safe, structured environment where building trusting relationships are core to the approach. The children are carefully selected according to their individual holistic profile of needs. Individual and group plans are then formulated, with all targets thoroughly discussed with all involved including the pupils themselves. Staff then provides a variety of experiences, opportunities, approaches and resources to address these needs within a culture of trust, understanding and knowledge incorporating the six principles of nurture. Progress is closely monitored.
Presently the nurture base is offering:
- Self-esteem and talk time sessions- one to one sessions.
- Art therapy- supporting those children whom have emotional needs through art and creativity activities.
- Citizenship (including social and emotional needs) – this is to ensure that children have the opportunity to discuss what is and is not acceptable behaviour.
- Choice sessions- where children can discuss and reflect on their actions and actions of others. These sessions link closely to the SEAL programme that runs throughout the school and links to supporting children with Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning.
- Children’s learning is understood developmentally
- The classroom offers a safe base
- The importance of nurture for the development of self-esteem
- Language is a vital means of communication
- All behaviour is communication
- The importance of transition in children’s lives
